Lorenzo's Safari Baby Shower — Woman's Club Bellflower
About This Installation
A safari-themed baby shower at the Woman's Club in Bellflower. I designed a beige rectangular backdrop with a custom brown decal, and layered the installation with green palm leaves, dry palm fronds, and giraffe-print accent balloons for a textured, savanna-ready feel. The organic balloon garland used pale salmon, latte, and meadow tones — warm enough to feel safari without falling into jungle-green cliché. The mix of fresh greenery, dried palms, and print balloons is a signature of my more elevated themed installs — it reads editorial rather than kids'-party. Full venue coordination and setup by my team.
Pale salmon, latte, meadow, beige, and brown anchored the rectangular backdrop in a safari palette pulled deliberately away from the jungle-green cliche that most safari themes default to. The Woman's Club in Bellflower has overhead venue lighting that flattens any saturated green into mud — so I built the palette around warm earth tones and let the meadow note do the only green work. The result reads more African dusk than zoo gift shop.
A beige rectangular backdrop framed the composition as a flat plane — rectangles photograph cleaner than arches when the install has to carry a graphic element, and the custom brown decal needed a flat field to read against. Green palm leaves and dry palm fronds layered into the garland at the top and side, mixing live-feeling green with the texture of dried fronds so the install carried two distinct foliage registers. Giraffe-print accent balloons threaded through the organic garland at uneven intervals — small enough to read as pattern, not as costume. The pale salmon and latte tones held the dominant share of the balloons, with the meadow and brown supporting at lower density.
My team built the rectangular backdrop in our studio, with the custom brown decal applied flush so the safari graphic sat as part of the panel rather than as decal stuck on top. The dry palm fronds were sourced for shape and color match rather than pulled from a generic dried-foliage kit — fronds at the wrong scale would have collapsed the editorial register the palette was set up to hold. The giraffe-print balloons are a specialty supplier item; ordering them in advance and threading them by hand kept their distribution organic rather than evenly spaced.
The Woman's Club in Bellflower is a working community venue, which means the room geometry is generous but the lighting is fluorescent-leaning and uneven. I sized the rectangular backdrop against the room's longest clean wall and positioned it where the overhead fixtures were least direct on the panel face — overhead glare on a printed decal kills the graphic. The warm palette held the room's cool lighting in check; a cooler palette would have gone clinical under the same fluorescents.
A safari baby shower lives or dies on whether it reads editorial or kids'-party — the mix of fresh greenery, dried palms, and print balloons is the line, and it held.
