Kamilah's Citrus Baby Shower in Arcadia
About This Installation
A fresh, citrus-themed baby shower at a private home in Arcadia. I designed a peach arch backdrop and layered a second orange open arch in front, creating depth for photos. Green artificial leaves and small artificial oranges scattered through the composition gave the installation a citrus-grove feel, and a custom orange sticker personalized the final detail. The organic balloon garland blended white, orange, peach, and green — a palette that reads bright and cheerful without crossing into juvenile. Backyard baby showers in Arcadia are especially rewarding to install because the natural light makes color palettes like this pop in every photo. Full design, delivery, and setup by my team.
The white, orange, peach, and green mixture was tuned for direct sunlight on an Arcadia backyard — the hardest light a balloon install ever sits in. Saturated orange goes neon under midday sun and reads cheap; I chose a peach mid-tone to carry most of the warm work and let the saturated orange show up in smaller doses as accent. White held the highlights without going chalky; green grounded the citrus theme in something that read botanical rather than synthetic. The palette had to survive sun directly, sun filtered through trees, and the warm shift toward golden hour without going muddy at any point.
Two arches layered front-to-back built depth into a flat backyard. The peach arch backdrop carried the primary mass; an orange open arch sat in front of it, half-scale, so the composition read as two pieces of architecture rather than one wall of balloons. Green artificial leaves and small artificial oranges threaded through the organic balloon garland at the junction between the two arches — placed at the points where the eye lands first in a wide shot. A custom orange sticker carried the personalized detail at a scale that read close-up but didn't dominate the full composition.
The arch panels, the layered structural frame, the styled leaves and oranges, and the custom sticker were built by my team in our studio. The artificial fruit was the call that pulled the install out of generic-citrus-themed territory — real oranges would have shifted color and weight across the day, and silk-quality artificial fruit photographs as well as the real thing without any of the operational risk.
A backyard install in Arcadia gives you the natural light a venue can never match, but it asks for everything in return — wind, sun, uneven ground, no overhead structure to anchor against. I weighted the arch bases heavier than an indoor build would have needed, sized the layered geometry so the open arch couldn't shift into the backdrop arch under a breeze, and placed the whole composition on the section of the yard where the sun stayed consistent through the photo hour. The natural light did the heavy lifting on color; the structural overbuild kept the install standing.
A citrus palette outdoors is a discipline problem more than a color problem — the restraint on the saturated orange was what let every photograph hold up.
