Heidi's Baby Shower — A Little Cutie

Montebello Clubhouse July 2025

About This Installation

A citrus-themed baby shower at the Clubhouse in Montebello. I designed an in-house built round backdrop panel with vinyl 'A Little Cutie is on the Way' lettering and an orange graphic, framed by a full organic balloon arch in orange, peach, cream, and white tones wrapping around both sides. Small orange fruit accents and greenery leaves were woven throughout the garland, giving the installation a fresh, playful California feel perfect for this outdoor venue setting.

Orange, peach, pale salmon, and white spanned the round backdrop in a gradient that traced the citrus theme without sliding into kids'-party orange — at the Montebello Clubhouse, the room's mixed natural-and-overhead light meant any single saturated orange would have read either neon or muddy depending on the time of day. I pulled the palette across four tones so the wall held its citrus identity at every point in the afternoon. The white kept the composition from going monochromatic warm.

The round backdrop panel was the anchor — geometry chosen specifically because circles photograph cleaner than rectangles when the install has to share frame with mixed seating and a buffet table. Vinyl 'A Little Cutie is on the Way' lettering ran across the panel face with an orange citrus graphic at the focal axis. The organic balloon arch wrapped around both sides of the round panel rather than sitting beneath it, framing the composition like parentheses. Small orange fruit accents and greenery leaves were threaded through the garland at uneven intervals, breaking the balloon-only repetition so the install read as botanical rather than as a fruit-shaped balloon kit.

My team built the round backdrop panel in our studio with the vinyl lettering and the citrus graphic CNC-cut and mounted flush. The fruit accents were chosen for scale specifically — small enough that they read as garnish rather than as props, large enough that the camera caught them as intentional texture. The greenery leaves were sourced for color match against the meadow tones, not pulled from a generic foliage bin.

The Clubhouse in Montebello is a venue with strong indoor-outdoor flow and a lot of ambient brightness coming through the side openings. I sized the round panel against the clearest sightline from the seating area and oriented the arch so its widest opening faced where photographers would naturally stand. The white in the palette earned its keep there — California venue light tends toward cool overhead and warm side-natural, and the white tied the two temperature zones into one readable wall.

A baby shower this playful runs the risk of dropping into cartoon-citrus territory; the discipline came from holding the orange family across four tones and letting the fruit accents stay small.
