Baby Basta's Polo Lounge
About This Installation
A sophisticated baby shower at Castaway Restaurant in Burbank. I designed an in-house built arched backdrop panel with vinyl 'Baby Basta's Polo Lounge' lettering, paired with an open arch frame. Organic balloon garland in dusty blue, emerald green chrome, cream, and white tones cascaded along the arch and backdrop. Large helium accent balloons flanked the setup, and the restaurant's elegant banquet room with warm lighting provided a refined setting for this celebration.
The deep blue, emerald green chrome, cream, and retro blue palette pulled the Polo Lounge concept into a register that sat alongside Castaway's banquet room instead of fighting it. Restaurant interiors run warm and dim — overhead pendants, wall sconces, no daylight to depend on — and the chrome emerald was specifically picked for how it catches that warm low light without flattening. Flat matte greens go dead in restaurant lighting; the chrome held depth and gave the install its richest accent.
The composition was built around an arched backdrop panel and an open arch frame standing in front of it — two architectural moves that read as one layered object from the camera position. Vinyl 'Baby Basta's Polo Lounge' lettering sat on the backdrop panel, cut clean and sized to read from across the banquet room. Organic balloon garland threaded along the arched panel and continued onto the open frame, so the two pieces shared a single garland line instead of carrying separate ones. Large helium accent balloons flanked the install at floor level — punctuation, not filler.
My team built both the arched panel and the open arch frame in-house. The vinyl headline was cut on our CNC and laid flush so it read as part of the panel surface rather than as an applique. The garland used biodegradable latex throughout, sized in a deliberately tight cluster pattern at the arch crown so it would carry the weight of the deep blue without looking lopsided once the eye scanned down.
Castaway is a working restaurant with a banquet room — which means the room geometry is fixed but you don't control the lighting curves between courses. I sized the panels to fit the room's natural focal wall, placed the open arch where the existing pendant cluster wouldn't drop a hard shadow across the lettering, and kept the helium accent balloons short enough not to interfere with the chandelier sightline from the seated tables.
A Polo Lounge theme is the kind of brief that fails when the color story tries to do too much. Four tones, two arches, one cohesive object — that was the install.
