Zander — Rookie of the Year

Pico Rivera Private Residence January 2026

About This Installation

A baseball-themed 'Rookie of the Year' first birthday at a private residence in Pico Rivera. I designed a large blue backdrop panel with custom white and blue striped pattern and a diamond-shaped 'Zander' name plate. Organic balloon garland in royal blue, baby blue, white, and clear tones framed the setup, with baseball ball accent balloons woven throughout. A large number '1' sticker in white added the birthday milestone focal point to this all-American celebration.

Royal blue, baby blue, and white is the obvious palette for a baseball-themed install, which is exactly why it had to be handled carefully — every Little League banner in the country runs the same three notes, and the install needed to read as composed rather than as licensed-product kitsch. I held the royal blue as the saturated anchor, used the baby blue as the mid-tone that softened the contrast, and let white carry the highlight register. The stripe pattern on the backdrop carried the baseball reference structurally, which let the palette stay disciplined instead of leaning on themed graphics to do the work.

The large blue backdrop panel anchored the composition with its custom white-and-blue striped field — a structural pattern built into the panel itself rather than applied as printed graphics. The diamond-shaped 'Zander' name plate sat at the panel's vertical center, the diamond geometry referencing the baseball field shape without resorting to a literal field-graphic. Vinyl-cut lettering across the diamond at adult eye-level. Organic balloon garland framed the panel along the top and one side, with baseball ball accent balloons woven into the garland at irregular intervals — placed as accents within the composition rather than spread evenly as a pattern. The large white number '1' sticker anchored the lower panel as the birthday milestone marker.

Every fabricated piece — the striped panel, the diamond name plate, the vinyl lettering, the baseball accents — was built in-studio. The striped pattern was the call most baseball installs get wrong: printed stripes show their pixel edges in close-up photographs, and rented striped panels come at standard widths that rarely match a home wall. I built this one sized to the family's living room wall, the stripes hand-applied at a width that read clean from both wide and close camera distances.

The Pico Rivera home gave us a working family living room — which meant the install had to coexist with toddler movement, food service, and a single sightline that the camera would shoot from all afternoon. I sized the panel to fit that one composed sightline and placed the marquee anchor where the toddler's eye-line would meet it from the high chair, not from adult standing height.

A first birthday with a theme has to work for two audiences in different photographs — the toddler in the chair and the camera at adult height — and the panel's vertical layering handled both sightlines cleanly.
