Amit's 30th Birthday

Long Beach The Grand November 2025

About This Installation

A bold, masculine 30th birthday setup at The Grand in Long Beach. I designed a full backdrop with organic balloon garland in black, gold chrome, and cream tones, paired with an in-house built round-top backdrop panel and marquee light-up letters. The vinyl 'Happy 30th Birthday' lettering and custom cake stand completed the composition.

The black, gold chrome, cream, and tan mixture was tuned for a 30th — old enough to need restraint, young enough that the gold had to do real work. Black anchored the panel and held depth under The Grand's overhead lighting; gold chrome carried the celebratory note without tipping into prom-night territory; cream and tan kept the warm side of the palette breathing so the whole thing read masculine instead of severe. Chrome alone would have flattened. Black alone would have eaten the room.

The round-top backdrop panel anchored the wall, with organic balloon garland spilling across the curve and breaking the hard geometry at the top edge. Marquee letters with warm bulbs sat to one side of the panel — placed off-center so the composition had a primary mass and a counterweight rather than a symmetrical setup that reads like a hotel banner. Vinyl 'Happy 30th Birthday' lettering ran across the panel at a scale that read from the bar across the room. The custom cake stand sat at the base of the garland, low enough to keep the panel's vertical proportions intact in wide shots.

The round-top panel, the marquee letters, the cake stand, the vinyl — built by my team in our studio. The marquee bulbs were warm-temperature, matched to The Grand's interior lighting; cool-white LEDs would have fought the cream tones in the garland and pulled the palette out of balance. No outsourcing, no rental inventory stretched to fit.

The Grand is a finished event venue, which means the room geometry and lighting are fixed before you walk in. I sized the panel to fit a single dominant sightline from the entry, placed the marquee letters where the overhead wash wouldn't compete with the bulb temperature, and kept the garland weighted enough at the base that nothing shifted across a four-hour evening. The black gave the gold somewhere to sit; the cream gave the camera somewhere to rest.

A 30th wants to feel like a milestone without announcing itself in neon — the off-center marquee did the announcing so the rest of the install could stay quiet.
