Anjani's 1st Bee-Day

Mid-Wilshire Private Residence November 2025

About This Installation

A vibrant bee-themed first birthday at a private residence in Mid-Wilshire. I designed a dual-panel backdrop — a white panel with vinyl 'Happy 1st Bee-Day Anjani' lettering with bee and honeycomb stickers, and a yellow 3D arched panel. Organic balloon garland in orange, yellow, green tea, and white tones cascaded around both panels. Artificial sunflower accents and decorative wooden elements added detail, creating a sweet outdoor garden party atmosphere.

The orange, yellow, green tea, and white palette anchored the bee theme without falling into honeycomb cliché — most bee-themed first birthdays land on flat yellow and black stripes that photograph as costume. I chose tones closer to a working garden: orange for warmth, green tea as the leafy mid-note, white to keep the composition from going too saturated under outdoor light. Mid-Wilshire residential daylight is high and a little diffused by neighboring rooftops, and that flatness needed warm tones to hold their value on camera.

Two panels framed the photo zone — a white panel carrying the vinyl 'Happy 1st Bee-Day Anjani' headline with bee and honeycomb stickers, and a yellow 3D arched panel sitting beside it. Organic balloon garland cascaded across both, threading the four palette colors so the eye traced from one panel to the other instead of treating them as separate objects. Artificial sunflowers sat at the base where the garland met the floor, and decorative wooden elements broke up the otherwise smooth panel surface — kept the garden-party note honest without adding a fifth color.

My team built both panels in our studio the week before the install. The vinyl lettering was cut to sit flush against the white panel — not stuck-on stickers stretched to fit — and the bee and honeycomb accents were placed individually so the headline read clean from across the yard. The yellow 3D arch was sized to match the white panel's height so the composition didn't lean visually toward either side.

A private residence install means no overhead lighting plan, no controlled sightlines — just whatever the yard gives you. I planned the panel placement around the strongest natural-light hour of the afternoon, set up so the sun fell at an angle that lit the sunflower accents from above instead of flattening them. The wooden elements at the base anchored the install on grass where a fully balloon-loaded composition would have looked top-heavy.

A bee theme can read either as kindergarten craft or as a thought-through garden composition — the difference is whether the yellow has neighbors, and how many. Here it had three, and that was enough.
