Wally's Winter ONEderland
About This Installation
A magical Winter ONEderland first birthday for Wally at Heartland Farm Family Ranch in Sylmar. I designed a large blue backdrop panel with custom winter scene featuring vinyl lettering and illustrated snow-covered trees, a bunny, and snowflakes. Organic balloon garland in blue slate, silver, white, and light blue tones framed the setup, with two real pine trees placed alongside. A white cake stand and fake snow styling on the ground completed this outdoor winter wonderland celebration.
The blue slate, silver, white, and light blue palette anchored a Winter ONEderland concept against an outdoor ranch in Sylmar — January light at a working ranch is cooler and longer than indoor venue lighting, which let the cool palette hold its temperature instead of reading washed-out. I chose blue slate over a true navy because slate carries gray in it; under direct outdoor light a saturated navy would have flared darker than the rest of the composition. Silver sat as the structural metallic; white and light blue carried the snow reference without tipping into pastel.
The composition built around a large blue backdrop panel illustrated with a winter scene — vinyl lettering across the top, illustrated snow-covered trees in the mid-ground, a bunny and snowflakes layered into the foreground graphic. Two real pine trees stood alongside the panel, scaled to give the install genuine vertical depth — fake-pine substitutes would have read costume against the ranch's actual landscape. Organic balloon garland framed the panel and the trees together so the install read as one continuous winter scene rather than as a panel plus two flanking objects. A white cake stand and a layer of fake snow on the ground anchored the floor of the composition.
The backdrop panel, the vinyl illustrations, the winter-theme cutouts, the cake stand — all built by my team in our studio. The real pine trees were sourced rather than built; they're the only piece of the composition that wasn't fabricated, and the choice mattered because the ranch landscape would have rejected a synthetic tree at the scale we needed. The fake snow on the ground was tested on a swatch before install to confirm it photographed as snow rather than as styrofoam under the actual outdoor light.
Heartland Farm Family Ranch is a working outdoor venue with no overhead lighting control and a wide-open horizon line. I oriented the panel so the afternoon light crossed it at an angle that brought out the illustrated depth, and anchored the install with heavier base weighting to handle ranch-property wind. The two real pine trees did double duty — composition anchors and natural wind breaks for the garland's tallest section.
A Winter ONEderland outdoors in Sylmar is a contradiction the install has to solve. The real pine trees solved it — they made the composition true to the landscape it sat in.
