Sasha's 13th Birthday
About This Installation
A modern teen birthday at a private home in Bel Air. I designed a sleek installation with light-up marquee numbers 13 and organic balloon garland in teal, black, white, and silver. Clean lines and bold contrast for an age-appropriate celebration.
The teal, black, white, and silver palette anchored a thirteenth birthday inside a Bel Air home — high ceilings, restrained interior, and the kind of lighting that punishes any palette that hasn't been thought through. A teen install at thirteen sits in the hardest age-bracket to dress: too pastel and it reads younger than the kid, too club-style and it reads older. I planned teal as the single saturated note so the install had identity, with black, white, and silver carrying the architecture so the composition stayed sharp rather than busy. Under the home's overhead lighting the teal held a cool jewel-tone register instead of flattening to navy.
The composition was built around the light-up marquee numbers '13' as the only structural object. Organic balloon garland in teal, black, white, and silver framed the marquee — denser at the base where the numbers met the floor, thinning upward so the marquee's bulbs read clean against the wall behind them rather than crowded into the garland. No backdrop panel, no arch, no auxiliary structure. The marquee handled the focal-point job and the garland did the framing. Restraint is what made the install read modern; another panel would have pushed it back into a younger register.
The marquee '13' was built with warm-temperature bulbs in my studio. Cool-LED marquee numbers under home lighting read as office signage; warm bulbs at the right wattage read as installation lighting. The black and silver balloons were placed at specific structural anchor points — three black clusters at the garland's base and corners, four silver accents threaded between — rather than evenly distributed. Even distribution of contrast colors flattens the garland; clustered placement gives it rhythm.
Bel Air homes are notoriously specific about install impact — wall mounting is rarely an option, ceiling rigging often isn't either. I planned the entire install as a freestanding floor composition so nothing required hardware in the home's surfaces. The garland's base weighting was built to clear the room's traffic flow and hold steady through the party run without any structural intrusion into the architecture.
Thirteen is the age where the kid is suddenly aware of how the install reads on social; the marquee's warm light gave every phone photo a flattering color cast without needing a filter.
