Sara's 1st Birthday — Swan Princess

Arcadia Private Residence October 2025

About This Installation

A sweet swan-themed first birthday at a private residence in Arcadia. I designed a balloon garland with backdrop panel in pink, blush, white, and clear bubble balloons. The in-house built ripple backdrop panel featured vinyl 'Happy First Birthday Sara' lettering, decorative swan figures, and an in-house built cake stand — creating a fairy-tale focal point in the garden setting.

The pink, blush, white, and clear bubble mixture was tuned for outdoor garden light — the kind of dappled afternoon light a residential garden in Arcadia gives you, where pure white reads slightly cool and pure pink reads slightly hot. I planned the palette as two warm tones (pink, blush) balanced against two neutrals (white, clear) so the composition held its warmth without tipping into sweetness. The clear bubble balloons did the most work of any single element — they read as light rather than as color, which let the garden's natural light pass through the install instead of stopping at it.

The composition centered on an in-house built ripple backdrop panel — the ripple texture giving the panel surface relief that flat board can't match — with vinyl 'Happy First Birthday Sara' lettering at the upper third and decorative swan figures placed at the panel's lower edge. An in-house built cake stand sat in front of the panel at first-birthday height, sized so a one-year-old could be photographed alongside it without the panel disappearing behind her shoulder. Organic balloon garland framed the panel along the top and one side, and the clear bubble balloons threaded through the warmer tones at irregular points to break up the density.

Every fabricated piece — the ripple panel, the vinyl lettering, the swan figures, the cake stand — was built by my team in our studio the week before. The ripple texture on the panel was deliberate: a smooth panel would have read backdrop-flat in photographs; the ripple caught the garden light and gave the surface visible depth.

A private residence in Arcadia gives you garden geometry rather than venue geometry — uneven ground, variable light, no controlled ceiling. I sited the panel along a fence line that gave the install a clean horizon behind it and oriented the composition so the afternoon sun crossed the panel rather than hitting it flat. The cake stand sat on a level patch of patio rather than on the lawn so the photographs would have a stable visual baseline.

The swan figures sat low on purpose — at toddler eye-level. A one-year-old will reach for them; a parent will photograph the reach. The install was sized for that single frame.
