Peykar's Question Mark Gender Reveal — Beverly Hills
About This Installation
A statement gender reveal installation at a private home in Beverly Hills, centered on a dramatic question-mark-shaped balloon — one of my most-requested reveal designs. I paired it with a large golden reveal balloon filled with confetti and custom text, set against an organic balloon garland in gold, sand, and cream neutrals. The question-mark shape carries the suspense visually without needing a large backdrop, making it a particularly good choice for Beverly Hills backyards where clients want impact without clutter. Full design, build, and on-site install by my team, with confetti-balloon filled and prepped so the reveal moment is clean.
Gold, sand, and cream is a palette planned for a backyard install where the surrounding architecture already carries color — Beverly Hills homes lean cream-and-stone in their exterior tone, and a saturated reveal palette would have collided with the house behind the composition. I kept the three notes warm-adjacent and within the same tonal family, so the install read as composed against the house rather than competing with it. The gold did the work of saturation; the sand and cream pulled it back from being a single-tone gold-bomb.
The composition was anchored on shape rather than on panel. The question-mark-shaped balloon stood as the architectural element — sculptural, freestanding, the curve doing the work that an arched backdrop would carry in a smaller install. The large golden reveal balloon sat as the punctuation, sized to read as the visual answer to the question mark's posed shape. Custom text on the reveal balloon was vinyl-applied at a scale that read at conversational distance but didn't dominate the balloon's own form. Organic garland in the three palette tones threaded along the ground, anchoring both shapes to a single composed base rather than letting them float as separate objects.
The question-mark structure was built around an internal frame in studio, the curve held in tension by the frame so the balloon-shape stayed precise rather than slumping under its own weight. A frameless question-mark would have read as a sagging shape from any angle off-axis. The reveal balloon was filled and the confetti packed in-studio the morning of the install — confetti settles in transit, and a balloon prepped at the venue from a sealed bag is the only way to guarantee a clean reveal pop.
The Beverly Hills backyard offered the affordance of open sky and the constraint of competing visual weight from the house and pool deck. A standard rectangular backdrop would have sat as a wall in the middle of a non-wall space — the question-mark shape carried the reveal moment without imposing geometry that didn't belong in an open-air composition. Wind was the build's other concern, and the freestanding structure used heavier base weighting than an indoor install would have called for.
A gender reveal's design has one functional requirement — to direct every eye to the reveal mechanic at the right moment. The question-mark shape did that work before the reveal balloon ever popped.
