Baby Ignatenko — Is on the Way!
About This Installation
A boho-inspired gender reveal at a private oceanfront home in Malibu. I designed a dual-panel backdrop setup — a smaller arched panel with vinyl 'Baby Ignatenko is on the Way!' lettering and a larger panel framed by organic balloon garland in cream, beige, and blush tones. Pampas grass arrangements styled alongside the backdrop and a large teddy bear accent added warmth. A clear acrylic box filled with white balloons served as the reveal element, all set against a stunning Pacific Ocean backdrop.
The cream, beige, and blush mixture was tuned for sun-bleached light — the kind that comes off the Pacific at midday and washes any cool tone flat. Warm neutrals hold their value in that light; chrome or pastel would have read white on camera. Pampas grass arrangements sat at the base of the larger panel and softened the edge where the garland met the floor — kept the boho note consistent without adding another color to the mix.
Two panels, two functions. The arched panel carried the vinyl announcement — a CNC-cut headline sized to read from anywhere in the room and built so the lettering sat flush, not stuck-on. The larger panel framed the reveal moment itself: organic balloon garland draped across the top, a clear acrylic box at center, the teddy bear accent breaking the symmetry. My team built both panels in our studio the week before — no rental inventory, no generic frame stretched to fit.
The oceanfront site asked for two compromises. Wind off the water would have pulled any lightly-secured garland out of shape by golden hour, so the structural setup used heavier base weighting than a sheltered indoor build would have needed. And the family wanted the Pacific in every wide shot — which meant the panels had to read against an open horizon, the hardest backdrop an installation can sit against. The boho palette earned its keep there: warm tones held the eye on the panels without competing with the view.
By the moment of the reveal everything sat where it was supposed to — the acrylic box at the center of the panel, the teddy bear leaning into the frame, the garland above the ocean instead of against it.
