Niko & Luka's Birthday at GG's Ranch Sun Valley

Sun Valley GG's Ranch April 2025

About This Installation

A dual-brother birthday at GG's Ranch in Sun Valley — one of my favorite outdoor ranch venues for installations that need personality. I designed two arch backdrops (one blue, one cream) and built in a police-car foil balloon, farm-animal balloons, a dark blue starburst element, and cow-print accent balloons to cover both brothers' interests. The organic balloon garland used light blue, dark blue, grey, red, yellow, and green — a wide playful palette that works for two boys with different favorites. Dual-focal installs like this are ideal for sibling birthdays because each child gets their own photograph-ready moment. Full design, ranch setup, and install by my team.

The light blue, dark blue, grey, red, yellow, and green mixture spilled across a six-tone range that most installs can't hold together — but a dual-brother birthday justifies the breadth. I planned the palette as two overlapping subsets: cool tones (light blue, dark blue, grey) weighted toward one brother's arch, warm tones (red, yellow) weighted toward the other, green threaded between the two so the composition didn't fracture into a 'his and his' line. Outdoor ranch light at GG's let saturated colors hold their value where indoor lighting would have flattened them.

The composition built around two arch backdrops side by side — one blue, one cream — each carrying its own props for one brother. A police-car foil balloon and a dark blue starburst element framed one arch; farm-animal balloons and cow-print accent balloons framed the other. Organic balloon garland ran across the top of both arches and met at the seam between them, so the two installs read as one continuous frame rather than two separate setups. The seam carried no prop and no graphic — just garland — which kept the eye traveling between the two arches instead of stopping at the boundary.

Both arches, the foil balloon integration, the cow-print balloon hand-selection, the starburst element — built and assembled by my team in our studio and brought to the ranch as completed pieces. Cow-print balloons in particular were selected for print scale: the print had to be large enough to read from photograph distance, not catalog distance, or the texture would have looked like static.

GG's Ranch is one of my favorite outdoor venues because the open space doesn't require you to compose around fixed architecture. The constraint is wind and direct sunlight rather than ceiling height. I anchored the arches with heavier base weighting than an indoor build would need, oriented them so the afternoon sun crossed the composition at an angle rather than head-on, and placed the props at sibling-photograph height — each brother could stand in front of his own arch without the other arch crowding the frame.

A dual-brother install lives or dies on the seam between the two halves. Holding the garland alone at that seam — no prop, no graphic — is what made the two arches read as one composition.
