Mila's Butterfly 1st Birthday in North Hills

North Hills August 2025

About This Installation

A soft, feminine first birthday at a private home in North Hills. I designed a white backdrop with pink custom text and a butterfly graphic as the focal element, paired with a white round cake stand for photos. The organic balloon garland stayed light — white, pale pink, and light green — a palette that feels garden-fresh rather than candy-pink, and photographs particularly well in home-natural light. Subtle pastels are a recurring request from my North Hills and San Fernando Valley clients who want first-birthday decor that will look current in photos years later rather than locked into a trend.

White, pale pink, and light green is a palette built to survive home-natural daylight without going saccharine — most first-birthday compositions default to candy pinks that read sunburnt by noon in any window-lit room. The pale pink sat at a saturation low enough that the white still read as the dominant; the light green did the work that gold or beige usually would in a warmer palette, introducing a cool note that stopped the pinks from drifting toward bubblegum under afternoon sun. North Hills daylight in late summer runs hot and direct, and a saturated palette would have lost its register by 3pm.

The white backdrop served as the back plane and let the custom pink lettering and butterfly graphic carry the composition's only saturated note. The butterfly graphic anchored as the focal element — placed off-center, not at the panel's geometric middle, so the lettering and the butterfly read as two separate visual weights rather than a stacked headline-image arrangement. Organic balloon garland traced the top of the backdrop and one side, weighted with the light green at the bottom where the green would read against any natural floor light, and the pale pinks concentrated at the top where the lettering's color would echo into the garland.

The white round cake stand at floor level matched the backdrop's tone exactly — built in-studio to a specific height that put the cake at the same vertical line as the butterfly graphic's center. A mismatched white between stand and panel would have shown in photographs as two different whites; matched in-studio paint kept the composition reading as one continuous register.

A private home in North Hills gave us full control over window-light timing — the family pulled the room's heavier curtains to soften direct sun during the photographs, which let the pale palette sit in diffused daylight rather than harsh afternoon angles. A venue install couldn't have offered that flexibility. The trade-off was an 8-foot ceiling, which kept the panel proportions vertical and tight rather than wide.

A 1st birthday installation has to age — the family will photograph it once and look at the pictures for years. The palette restraint here is what keeps these photographs from looking date-stamped to a single trend cycle.
