60th Birthday Celebration
About This Installation
An elegant, masculine 60th birthday at XO Banquet Hall in North Hollywood. I designed a half-arch with organic balloon garland in deep chocolate brown, gold chrome, and cream — accented with pampas grass for a refined, natural texture. The vinyl 'Happy 60th Birthday' lettering on the in-house built backdrop panel and gold metal stands created a sophisticated focal point.
The chocolate brown, gold chrome, and cream palette was tuned for a 60th — old enough that the install had to read refined rather than celebratory, masculine without leaning on black. Chocolate anchored the composition with more warmth than black would have given and held depth under XO Banquet Hall's overhead lighting; gold chrome carried the milestone note in a single confident register; cream lifted the whole thing so the brown didn't go heavy. Black-and-gold is the default 60th palette; the chocolate substitution is what made this install read as designed rather than ordered out of a catalog.
A half-arch carried the primary structural mass, with organic balloon garland in all three palette tones spilling across the curve. Pampas grass accents threaded through the garland at the base and at the top of the curve — natural texture against the chrome gold and a quieter way to break the rigid arch geometry than more balloons would have managed. The in-studio backdrop panel sat behind the half-arch with vinyl 'Happy 60th Birthday' lettering at a scale sized for the wide hall sightline. Gold metal display stands flanked the composition and gave the photo zone defined edges.
The backdrop panel, the vinyl lettering, the half-arch frame, the gold metal stands — built by my team in our studio. The pampas grass was the design call that pulled the install out of generic-corporate-elegance territory; chrome gold and chocolate brown alone would have read like a hotel lobby, and the natural texture restored the human scale.
XO Banquet Hall is a finished event venue, which means the room geometry is reliable but the overhead lighting is warm and fixed. I sized the half-arch to fit the dominant sightline from the seating area, placed the gold stands where the overhead light would catch the chrome without throwing hot spots into camera frames, and kept the pampas grass concentrated at the visual points where the eye lands first. The half-arch shape was deliberate — a full arch would have read like a wedding, and a flat backdrop would have read like a corporate event; the half-arch read as a milestone birthday and nothing else.
A 60th has to honor the milestone without making the install louder than the man it's for — the pampas grass and the chocolate substitution kept the volume right.
