Luseh's 1st Birthday
About This Installation
An elegant first birthday at L'Orange Venues in Burbank. I designed a dual-panel backdrop — a pastel pink panel paired with a burgundy arched panel — framed by organic balloon garland in baby pink, lilac, burgundy, and rose gold chrome tones. The vinyl 'Luseh's Birthday' lettering in gold script added a personalized touch, while a large burgundy satin bow accented the garland. The Mirelle 12-slat cake stand completed this refined, feminine composition.
The baby pink, lilac, burgundy, and rose gold chrome palette layered a four-tone progression that read as feminine without slipping into baby-shower softness. A first birthday at a venue needs a palette that holds value under controlled overhead light — and L'Orange's interior lighting flattens cool tones, so I weighted the mix warm. Burgundy carried the depth, rose gold chrome caught the room's overheads as accent reflection, and the baby pink and lilac softened the field so the warm tones didn't read as too heavy for a one-year-old's celebration.
Two panels framed the composition. My team built both in our studio the week before — a pastel pink rectangular panel paired with a burgundy arched panel, sized so the two surfaces read as a designed pair rather than mismatched backdrops. Organic balloon garland in the four-tone palette spanned the seam between them, with the burgundy concentration heavier at the base where the panels met and the baby pink lifting toward the crown of the arch. The vinyl 'Luseh's Birthday' lettering in gold script was applied across the burgundy panel, sized to read clean from across the room. A large burgundy satin bow accented the garland at the focal seam, and the Mirelle 12-slat cake stand sat in front as the foreground anchor.
The two-panel build was a deliberate fabrication choice — the contrast of the pastel rectangle against the burgundy arch gave the install a built-and-composed feel that single-panel work cannot achieve. The satin bow was sourced for the same drape reason fabric is always sourced rather than built; balloon work holds geometry, satin falls. The Mirelle cake stand has a slatted vertical profile that played against the soft curves of the garland above without competing — it earned its place rather than being defaulted into the install.
L'Orange Venues offers a controlled interior with stable geometry but fixed overhead lighting. I sized the two-panel pair to fit the room's primary photo sightline and placed the burgundy arch on the side closest to the room's strongest fixture, so the gold vinyl script picked up reflected light rather than sitting in shadow. The cake stand sat at a height that worked for both the seated cake-cutting shot and the standing wide-angle frame.
A first-birthday install at a venue has to photograph for two audiences — the child at table height, the camera at adult eye-line — and pairing a rectangular panel with an arched one gave each viewing height its own anchor.
