God Bless Luca

Burbank Castaway Restaurant November 2025

About This Installation

A heartfelt baptism celebration for Luca at Castaway Restaurant in Burbank. I designed an in-house built arched backdrop panel with vinyl 'God Bless Luca' lettering and a golden cross accent. Organic balloon garland in sea blue, cream, and gold chrome tones cascaded down one side. The elegant color palette and restaurant's evening ambiance with city views created a warm, faith-inspired celebration.

Sea blue, cream, and gold chrome was a palette built for Castaway's two competing light sources — the warm interior tungsten and the cool city-view dusk through the windows. A blue-heavy palette would have read cold against the tungsten; an all-cream one would have washed out near the windows. The sea blue sat at a mid-saturation that held distinct against either light register, the cream warmed the composition without going yellow, and the gold chrome anchored as the warm accent that tied the whole thing back to the indoor lighting.

The arched backdrop panel framed a single sightline, the arch shape chosen for its associative weight in a baptism context without resorting to literal religious iconography. Vinyl 'God Bless Luca' lettering sat at the apex of the arch, sized to read clean from a seated photograph distance. The golden cross accent sat below the lettering, smaller in scale than the text, which kept the cross reading as benediction rather than as the panel's primary subject. Organic balloon garland cascaded down one side of the arch only — a structural asymmetry that gave the composition visual weight on one shoulder rather than spreading evenly across the whole panel.

The arched panel was built by my team in-studio, the arch's curve cut precisely to fit the lettering's baseline. A rectangular panel with an arch graphic painted on would have read flat; this one carried the arch as physical geometry. The acrylic cross caught the warm interior light at its edges and threw a subtle refracted glow across the panel face — a metal cross would have thrown specular hot-spots that didn't belong in the soft photographic register the palette was set up for.

Castaway sits above Burbank with a view of the basin, which means the install had to compete with a wide window line that pulls every eye out of the room. I sized the panel and placed the garland's heavier side toward the windows, anchoring the composition so the sightline from inside the room held against the view rather than dissolving into it. The dusk-into-evening shift in window light was the install's hardest condition; the palette earned its keep across that transition.

A baptism install at a view restaurant has one job — to keep the camera on the family and the panel rather than on the basin behind them. The asymmetric garland cascade did that work.
