Lili's 25th Birthday — Black Glam

Beverly Hills Il Pastaio April 2025

About This Installation

A sleek, glamorous 25th birthday at Il Pastaio in Beverly Hills. I designed a black backdrop panel with vinyl 'Lili's 25th' lettering in white, framed by organic balloon garland in white and pearl white tones. A large custom white satin bow served as the centerpiece accent on the garland, with small black satin bows adding contrast throughout. The black round pedestal cake stand and restaurant's twinkling garden lights completed this ultra-chic, monochrome celebration.

Black, white, and pearl white is the most disciplined palette a 25th birthday can ask for — monochrome on three notes only, with the pearl carrying the difference between flat white and dimensional white. Il Pastaio's garden is lit by twinkling string lights overhead, and a monochrome composition reads at its best under that kind of fragmented warm light because there's no color to fight the string-light cast. Any saturated tone in this palette would have collided with the existing ambient warmth; black and white drank it instead.

The black backdrop panel was sized as a single composed sightline rather than a wide wall, framed by organic garland in white and pearl tones threaded along the top and one side. The vinyl 'Lili's 25th' lettering in white sat at adult eye-level, scaled to read from across the garden without dominating the panel face. The custom white satin bow served as the garland's primary anchor — oversized, hand-tied, placed off-center where the garland's volume was densest. Small black satin bows threaded through the white garland at irregular intervals, breaking the all-white field with punctuation rather than pattern. The black round pedestal cake stand at floor level closed the composition back to the panel's tone.

The white satin bow was built in studio at a scale most pre-made bows can't reach — pre-made bows top out around 8 inches and read as accessories at that size. This one was sized to function as a focal piece, not as an ornament. The vinyl lettering was CNC-cut and applied flush to the black panel, which kept the white reading clean rather than as a sticker pinned on; sticker-applied vinyl shows its edges in close-up photographs.

Il Pastaio is a restaurant with an outdoor garden, which gave the install string-light ambient warmth but also wind exposure and a working service path that the structural setup had to respect. I planned the panel with heavier base weighting than an indoor build would have needed, and kept the garland's run within a single sightline so the install didn't extend into any path the restaurant's servers needed open.

A 25th in a Beverly Hills restaurant has to look composed enough for social media and quiet enough not to perform for the room — the monochrome discipline was what held both at once.
