Julian's 1st Birthday at 888 Seafood Rosemead

Rosemead 888 Seafood Restaurant August 2025

About This Installation

A culturally grounded first birthday at 888 Seafood Restaurant in Rosemead. I designed a white arch backdrop with dusty blue custom text and Chinese characters — a meaningful personalization for the family that kept the installation rooted in heritage while still feeling celebratory. The organic balloon garland stayed in light blue, cream, and dusty blue, and foil balloon animals added a playful touch that worked for both kids and adults in the room. Restaurant installs like this require careful sizing and load-in coordination with venue staff, and my team handles all of it — design, build, delivery, install, and breakdown.

The light blue, cream, dusty blue, and white palette was chosen for 888 Seafood's banquet floor — Chinese-American restaurant rooms tend to run warm under tungsten and red accent lighting, which would have killed a true white-and-blue scheme. Dusty blue held the cooler note without going gray; cream warmed the composition enough that the install didn't fight the room's existing color temperature. The custom Chinese characters carried in dusty blue vinyl gave the heritage element weight without leaning on stereotyped red-and-gold gestures.

One white arch panel, sized to a single sightline. The dusty blue Chinese character lettering was CNC-cut and applied flush to the panel face, paired with the family's chosen English text — both rendered at the same scale so neither read as secondary. Organic balloon garland in light blue, cream, and dusty blue draped across the top of the arch and trailed down the right side, asymmetric on purpose so the geometry didn't read as a wedding arch. Foil balloon animals were placed at child eye-level along the base of the composition — the only piece in the install built for the toddler's view rather than the camera's.

My team built the arch panel and applied the bilingual vinyl in our studio. The character spacing and stroke weight on the Chinese lettering had to be vetted against the English text scale before cut — heritage text reads wrong fast if the optical sizing doesn't match the Roman alphabet beside it. The foil animals were sourced rather than fabricated; for a 1st birthday they're the right size and the right finish without needing custom work.

888 Seafood is a working restaurant, not a dedicated event venue — which means load-in had to be planned around service hours and the install had to fit a room that wasn't built around it. My team coordinated delivery, build, install, and breakdown with venue staff on a compressed window. I sized the arch to the available ceiling clearance and placed it where the restaurant's existing lighting would hit the panel face evenly without throwing shadow across the lettering.

The bilingual lettering did the cultural work; the rest of the install stayed restrained so the heritage element carried the page.
