Jacob's 10th Birthday at Sky Zone Alhambra

Alhambra Sky Zone July 2025

About This Installation

A dramatic 10th birthday installation at Sky Zone in Alhambra. I designed a cream backdrop with bold black lettering, paired with an organic balloon garland in dark green, cream, black, and gold. The combination of dark green and black gave the install a grown-up, almost sophisticated edge — perfect for a ten-year-old ready to feel less kid and more teen, without losing the celebration energy. Gold accents kept the palette warm. Venue installs like Sky Zone require setup coordination around high ceilings and party schedules, and my team handles both — full design, delivery, install, and breakdown.

The dark green, cream, black, and gold palette framed a tenth birthday inside Sky Zone Alhambra — a trampoline park lit with cool-temperature overhead fixtures and the occasional purple wash from feature lighting. A standard ten-year-old palette runs primaries and neons, both of which would have eaten alive whatever palette I tried to layer over them. I pulled the install toward dark green and black as anchors so the composition held its own visual weight under variable color light, with cream as the structural neutral and gold as the single warm note. Under Sky Zone's fixtures the dark green held depth instead of going swamp; the gold read warm against the cool ambient and kept the palette from feeling cold.

The backdrop carried bold black lettering on a cream field — high-contrast type sized to read across the park's wide sightlines, not just at panel range. Organic balloon garland in dark green, cream, black, and gold draped across the top of the panel and shouldered down one side, weighted heavier at the top so the lettering sat in clean visual space below. The gold accents sat at three structural points in the garland rather than threaded throughout — concentrated metallics anchor the eye; scattered metallics read as glitter.

The backdrop, the vinyl black lettering, and the structural rigging were all built and tuned in my studio. Cream-on-black is the simplest possible palette decision and the easiest to get wrong — the cream had to be warm enough not to read as cold white on camera, and the black latex had to be matte rather than the standard glossy finish that bounces venue lighting back as highlight. Both choices were made before the panel left the studio.

Sky Zone is a high-ceiling venue with party schedules that don't flex; install windows are short and breakdown is on the clock. My team set the panel against the dedicated party-room wall and rigged the garland to clear the room's overhead lighting cone so no fixture-shadow fell across the lettering. The gold balloons were positioned where the venue's cool overheads wouldn't strip their warmth — a structural placement choice, not a styling one.

Ten is the age where the kid is the camera director and the parent is the camera operator; the dark green let both audiences agree on a single photographic register.
