Hailey Maryam's 1st Birthday — One Sweet Blessing
About This Installation
A dreamy butterfly-themed first birthday at Verdi Garden event venue in Encino. I designed a dual-panel backdrop with organic balloon garland in blush and pastel pink, accented with a single in-house CNC-cut pink butterfly crowning the backdrop, an in-house built cake stand, and artificial pink and white flowers. The vinyl 'Hailey Maryam — One Sweet Blessing' lettering created an ethereal, photo-ready composition.
The blush, pastel pink, and dusty rose palette draped Verdi Garden's interior in three tones close enough to read as a single gradient. Pink first-birthday installs fail most often when the palette swings too wide — hot pink against pale pink against rose creates visual noise instead of cohesion. I planned a tighter range here, three pinks all sitting within a half-step of each other, so the composition would hold its softness without going flat. Under Verdi Garden's mixed venue lighting the dusty rose grounded the install and kept the blush from washing out on camera.
The composition built outward from a dual-panel backdrop crowned by a single in-house CNC-cut butterfly in pink. The butterfly sat at the top of the backdrop where the eye lands first, then the organic balloon garland threaded across both panels and pulled the gaze down toward the cake stand. Vinyl 'Hailey Maryam — One Sweet Blessing' lettering sat below the butterfly and read clean from across the room. Artificial pink and white flowers tucked into the garland's lower curve gave the composition a softer base than balloons alone would have.
My team built the cake stand and CNC-cut the butterfly in our studio — a single butterfly rather than the scattered swarm most theme installs default to. One large focal element holds the eye better than ten small ones, and it kept the composition reading as architectural rather than decorative. The vinyl headline was cut to sit flush against the panel surface so the typography read as part of the wall plane.
Verdi Garden is a dedicated event venue in Encino, which means reliable interior geometry but venue-controlled lighting you have to plan around. I sized the panels to fit the room's clearest sightline and placed the cake stand directly under the butterfly so seated cake-cutting shots and standing wide shots both framed the install cleanly. The single-butterfly choice solved a sightline problem too — a swarm would have crowded the headline from above.
A first birthday install has to work for the toddler at the cake and the camera six feet back. The butterfly handled the toddler's view; the panel composition handled the camera's.
