Gregory's 4th Birthday
About This Installation
A colorful 4th birthday at Two Strike Park in La Crescenta. I designed a white arch backdrop with custom text and a treat wall, surrounded by organic balloon garland in red, sea blue, silver, orange, black, and lime green. Black starburst accents added a fun, festive energy to this outdoor celebration.
The six-tone palette — red, sea blue, silver, orange, black, and lime green — was the brief, and the job was to keep it from reading as a clown-car color riot. Six tones at equal weight always collapse into visual noise; I planned the install around a clear hierarchy instead. Red and sea blue carried the dominant mass, silver and orange handled the secondary clusters, and lime green and black sat as the small-scale accents that broke up the rhythm. Under the open daylight of a park install, that hierarchy is what keeps a multi-color panel readable instead of chaotic.
The white arch backdrop did the heavy structural work — a neutral ground that let the six-color garland sit on top without fighting it. Custom text on the panel face was sized for the wide shots from across the picnic area, not for close-up reading. The treat wall sat as the secondary mass, scaled to be functional for the kids and photographically readable in the same frame as the arch. Organic balloon garland in all six tones threaded across the top of the arch and down both sides, with the black starburst accents punched in at clustered intervals — the starbursts were the small graphic notes that gave the eye somewhere to land in an otherwise loose, festive composition.
The starbursts were CNC-cut in my studio and mounted into the garland as structural pieces, not stuck on as stickers — at a park scale, anything that reads as applied decoration disappears at distance. The arch panel itself was built free-standing with heavier base weighting than an indoor install would need, because Two Strike Park sits in the foothill wind corridor and any sustained gust would have pulled a lighter rig out of true.
Two Strike Park in La Crescenta is an outdoor public site, which means the install had to be entirely self-supporting, weighted against afternoon wind, and tear-down ready in a short window. The park's mature trees gave the panel a backdrop of natural green that the lime green in the garland echoed without copying, and I placed the arch where the dappled tree shade hit it directly — full sun on a six-color panel would have flattened every tone to the same brightness value.
A kid's outdoor birthday with six colors works when the structure is disciplined and the chaos is decorative — the white arch held the discipline, and the garland did the rest.
