Giovanni's 1st Birthday — Bear Silhouette in Glendale

Glendale Clubhouse at Camden Apartments May 2025

About This Installation

A warm, woodsy first birthday at the Clubhouse of Camden Apartments in Glendale. I designed a cream arch backdrop with a custom sign and a bear silhouette as the focal graphic, framed by an organic balloon garland in baby blue, sand, dusty blue, and mocha. A white round cake stand sat at center for photos. The earth-tone palette gave the installation a grown-up feel while still reading as clearly baby-boy — a look that's been trending hard with my Glendale clients who want something beyond primary colors. Full design, delivery, and install by my team so the family could enjoy the day.

The baby blue, sand, dusty blue, mocha, and cream mixture was built to read clearly as baby-boy without falling back on primary blue. Earth tones do most of the work here — sand and mocha anchor the warm side, dusty blue and baby blue carry the gender note in two registers instead of one, and cream lifts the whole palette so it doesn't go muddy. Under the Camden Clubhouse's overhead lighting the mocha held depth instead of flattening to brown, and the dusty blue caught just enough warmth to feel like a den at golden hour rather than a baby store.

The cream arch backdrop carried a custom sign and a bear silhouette as the focal graphic — the bear sized to read from across the room without dominating the panel close-up. Organic balloon garland in all five palette tones framed the arch, threading the earth tones through the curve and breaking the rigid arch geometry at the top. A white round cake stand sat at the center base of the arch, low enough that the bear silhouette stayed unobstructed in wide shots and the cake itself became the secondary focal point in close-ups.

The arch panel, the custom sign, the bear silhouette graphic, and the cake stand styling were built by my team in our studio. The bear was the design call that pulled the install out of generic earth-tone first-birthday territory — a graphic at adult eye-level, not a stuck-on cutout at the base, so the composition read as a finished panel rather than a balloon arch with a prop in front of it.

The Clubhouse at Camden Apartments is a community room, which means the geometry is reliable but the lighting is residential-grade overhead — not designed for photographs. I sized the arch to fit a single sightline from the seating area, placed the bear graphic at the height where it would land clean in both seated cake-cutting shots and standing wide shots, and kept the garland weighted enough that the install didn't shift across a three-hour party. The earth-tone palette earned its keep against the room's neutral walls — the warm tones held the eye on the panel without the install fighting the room.

A first birthday in a community room has to make the room disappear in photographs — the bear silhouette and the disciplined palette did that work without raising their voice.
