Gia's Unicorn Birthday — Pastel Rainbow in Sherman Oaks
About This Installation
A playful unicorn-themed birthday at a private home in Sherman Oaks. I designed a colorful balloon garland accented with small unicorn balloons, and added a hanging balloon installation drifting from a tree — a favorite technique for outdoor birthdays because it makes the yard itself part of the decor. A custom welcome sign greeted guests at the entrance. The pastel palette — baby blue, light pink, light green, pastel yellow, and light purple — gave the whole installation a soft rainbow effect without looking candy-store bright, keeping it age-appropriate for a child's party but photograph-ready for parents. Full design, delivery, and install by my team.
The pastel palette — baby blue, light pink, light green, pastel yellow, light purple — was tuned for an outdoor home install in afternoon Sherman Oaks sun. Saturated rainbow tones flatten under direct California daylight and start to read candy-store; muted pastels hold their separation across all five colors without any one of them taking over the composition. The five-color spread is technically harder than a three-tone palette because every cluster has to balance against four others — but it's the only way a rainbow concept reads as designed instead of as themed.
The garland spilled along the yard's natural lines, accented with small unicorn balloons set at intervals where they'd catch the eye without crowding the palette. The hanging balloon installation drifted down from a mature tree — a technique I use for outdoor birthdays because it pulls the yard's vertical geometry into the install, so the photographs don't read as 'balloons against grass' but as 'balloons inside the space.' The custom welcome sign anchored the entrance and gave guests a fixed point before the install opened up across the yard.
My team built the welcome sign and assembled the garland clusters in our studio before delivery. The hanging tree installation was set on site — that piece can't be pre-built because the drop length and balloon spacing have to be tuned to the actual branch geometry once we're under the tree. Biodegradable latex across the whole install was non-negotiable for an outdoor home setting with kids and pets in the yard.
A private home gives you what a venue can't — you build with the yard itself instead of around it. The tree did most of the work that an indoor arch would have done; it gave the install a vertical anchor and let the garland run horizontal without needing structural framing to compete with it. The Sherman Oaks afternoon light through residential canopy is what made the pastel palette work — venue overheads would have washed the pinks and yellows to near-white.
A kid's birthday has to work for two viewers at the same time — the child looking up at the tree, and the parent shooting from across the yard. The hanging installation handled both jobs without needing two separate installs.
