Francine's 18th Birthday

Glendale Royal Palace Event Venue February 2026

About This Installation

An enchanting 18th birthday celebration at Royal Palace Event Venue in Glendale. I designed a backdrop with custom vinyl text and organic balloon garland in light blue, white, and silver tones. The light-up marquee number 18 served as the centerpiece focal point, while LED butterfly accents and artificial flower arrangements added a dreamy, magical atmosphere. The venue's crystal chandeliers and blue LED uplighting complemented the ethereal color palette.

The light blue, white, and silver palette was planned around Royal Palace's lighting before any other decision — the venue's crystal chandeliers throw warm overhead light, and the room runs blue LED uplighting at floor level. Most pastel installations get crushed under that kind of mixed-temperature wash, so I shaped a palette that lived in the cool register: silver to catch the chandelier light and reflect it back, white to hold middle value, and light blue to sit close to the uplighting rather than fight it. The cool palette and the cool uplighting layered instead of clashing.

The composition built around a central focal point. A 4ft light-up marquee number 18 anchored the floor as the headline object — its warm-bulb glow earned a deliberate exception to the cool palette, because an 18th-birthday install needs a numeral the camera can lock onto from anywhere in the room. The backdrop carried custom vinyl text and supported the organic garland that spilled across its upper edge in light blue, white, and silver. LED butterfly accents were threaded through the garland at staggered heights, and artificial flower arrangements anchored the corners where the panel met the floor. Butterflies and florals together can drift into theme-park territory; I kept the count low and the placement asymmetric so neither read as motif-stamping.

The marquee number was built with warm-temperature bulbs only — cool LEDs would have disappeared into the room's blue uplighting and turned the centerpiece into a vague glow. The vinyl headline was CNC-cut in my studio. The artificial flowers were chosen rather than fresh: an 18th-birthday party runs four to six hours under venue light, and fresh florals would have wilted past the cake moment. Artificial arrangements photograph identically at this scale and hold their geometry from setup to last guest.

Royal Palace is a dedicated event venue, which means floor space is generous but the lighting profile is fixed. I placed the marquee number where the room's overhead chandeliers wouldn't compete with its warm bulbs, and I sized the panel and garland to a single dominant sightline rather than scattering the install across angles the camera couldn't capture in one frame. The butterfly LEDs sat at heights that picked up the panel's vinyl text without crowding the marquee numeral below.

An 18th birthday is photographed standing — the honoree walks the room rather than sitting through it — and sizing the marquee number to read clean from the room's far corners is what made every wide shot work.
