Evelyn's Berry First Birthday

The pink, red, and cream palette framed a berry-themed first birthday inside PlayLab Eagle Rock's high-color play environment. Indoor playspaces run hot in saturation — primary-colored equipment, foam mats, branded signage — and any install built on bright pinks would have disappeared into the room's existing noise. I planned cream as the dominant tone to give the installation its own visual quiet, with the pink and red carrying the berry concept as accents rather than as the main color story. The cream let the strawberry stickers read as graphics instead of as more pattern.

The composition was a three-panel arrangement: a cream rectangular backdrop with moulding detail at the center, flanked by two pink half-arch panels at the wings. The moulding gave the center panel architectural weight — it stopped reading as a flat board and started reading as a wall. Vinyl 'Evelyn's Berry First Birthday' lettering sat at the panel's optical center, sized for the room's tight sightlines. Organic balloon garland in pink, red, and cream traced the seam where the half-arch panels met the rectangular panel, and heart-shaped balloons accented the garland at three anchor points. Strawberry and daisy stickers decorated the cream substrate at staggered heights. The custom photo montage panel sat to one side as a separate vignette.

The backdrop panel, the moulding detail, the half-arch panels, the vinyl lettering, and the photo montage were all built in my studio. The hearts were inflated to a smaller diameter than the garland's round balloons — same-diameter hearts disappear into the cluster; smaller hearts read as deliberate accents. I kept the red restrained: too much red against pink turns the palette into Valentine's territory rather than berry.

PlayLab is a children's playspace, not an event venue — that meant working around mounted equipment, low ceiling clearances in certain zones, and a floor layout intended for active toddlers rather than seated photography. I placed the panel run against the room's quietest wall so the install had a clean photographic background without play-equipment intrusion. The half-arch wings gave parents enough horizontal range to step back for a wide family shot.

A one-year-old can't pose; the panels did the work of holding the frame steady while she moved through it.
