Ethan's 12th Birthday — Dirt Bike

Glendale Private Home March 2026

About This Installation

A dirt bike-themed 12th birthday at a private home in Glendale. I designed a custom backdrop with a long road and dirt bike graphic, two large tiers of balloon garland around a 3-foot white cake stand, and organic balloon garland in black, red, blue, yellow, and white. The custom speed limit sign and finish flags brought the racing spirit to life.

The black, red, blue, yellow, and white palette spanned the racing-graphics range without sliding into toy-store primary. I planned the saturation rather than the hues — true racing-flag red and a deep, slightly desaturated blue, paired against a black that carried weight rather than gloss. White kept the composition from going heavy under a residential ceiling. Yellow was held to accent volume only; at full volume it would have pulled the whole palette toward arcade.

The composition built around a custom backdrop panel illustrated with a long road receding into the distance and a dirt bike at center foreground. Two tall tiers of organic balloon garland framed a 3-foot white cake stand in front of the panel, and a custom speed-limit sign anchored one side of the composition at boy-height. Finish flags sat on the opposite side to balance the visual weight. The road graphic gave the panel depth — a flat color block would have stayed a backdrop; the perspective road made it a scene.

The backdrop, the speed-limit sign, the finish flags, the cake stand structure — built by my team in our studio. The dirt-bike illustration was sized to read as the panel's focal point from across the room and to clear the cake stand in the closer shots. CNC-cut signage gave the speed-limit element clean edges; a printed-on-board version would have looked like party-store stock.

A private home in Glendale gives you sightline control and ceiling height limits in roughly equal measure. I sized the panel to the room's longest unobstructed wall and kept the garland tiers tight enough vertically to clear the standard residential ceiling without dragging the eye upward. The speed-limit sign and finish flags handled the floor-level interest so the photographs had layered depth rather than a single horizontal band.

A 12-year-old wants the bike; the family wants the photograph he'll keep when he's 22. The road graphic served both — kid-legible at standing height, camera-legible from across the room.
