Deiondre's 4th Birthday

Manhattan Beach Private Home September 2025

About This Installation

A superhero-themed 4th birthday at a private home in Manhattan Beach. I designed a red backdrop with custom black text and a spider accent, paired with a foil balloon number 4 featuring spider web details. The black, red, light blue, and blue balloon palette with spider web and spider accents brought the action-packed theme to life.

The red, black, and blue mixture was sized to the superhero brief without sliding into licensed-character cliché — most Spider-Man-adjacent fourth birthdays land on flat primary red against flat primary blue, which photographs as a candy-aisle billboard. I planned the palette around a deeper, slightly desaturated red as the dominant tone, with two blues at different values — light blue for the secondary mass and a true blue for the small-scale accents. Black framed everything and gave the spider-web graphics somewhere to sit without floating. Under the open daylight a private home install gets, the deeper red held its tone instead of going pink in the highlights.

The red backdrop carried the custom black headline text and the spider graphic as a single integrated composition — vinyl-cut and applied flush so the lettering and the spider read as part of the panel surface rather than as a sticker layer. The foil number 4 with spider-web detailing sat slightly offset from the panel center, anchored into the garland at floor level so the wide shots had a single bright object to compose around. Organic balloon garland in the four-tone palette draped across the top of the panel and down the corner — clustered, not evenly distributed, so the spider-web accents had room to read.

Every fabricated piece — the panel, the vinyl headline, the cut spider graphic, the web accents in the garland — was built by my team in studio. The web detailing on the number 4 specifically had to be matte vinyl, not glossy; a glossy web on a foil number would have caught daylight as hot spots and obliterated the graphic at any distance.

The Manhattan Beach private home install sat under bright open coastal light, which is the hardest lighting for any saturated red to survive — direct California sun pushes red toward orange in mid-frame and toward black in shadow. I placed the panel against a shaded wall section rather than under full sun, so the red held its mid-tone through the cake-cutting window. The site's openness was also an advantage: the panel could be built free-standing and viewed from any angle without competing with interior architecture.

A four-year-old's birthday panel works when it reads strong in the kid's eye-level photos and clean in the parents' wide shots — the deeper red and the off-center number handled both views at once.
