Cheers to 30
About This Installation
A glamorous 30th birthday celebration at Mer Yerevan in Glendale. I designed a luxurious installation with light-up marquee numbers 30 and organic balloon garland in mirror burgundy, silk cream, and mirror white gold. The Grace white 12-slat cake stand added an elegant centerpiece.
Mirror burgundy is a difficult color to use without tipping the whole composition into wine-bar cliché — most installations that reach for burgundy end up reading as autumnal regardless of the actual season. I balanced it here with silk cream as the warm neutral and mirror white gold as the highlight, which kept the burgundy reading as jewelry rather than as foliage. Mer Yerevan's interior runs warm tungsten in the evening, and burgundy under that light holds its depth instead of turning brown.
This was a garland-led composition rather than a backdrop-led one — no panel, no frame, just the organic garland and two focal objects sized to anchor it. The light-up marquee 30 sat at floor level as the primary anchor, two numerals built tall enough to read across the dining room. The Grace 12-slat cake stand in white sat as the secondary anchor, its vertical slats picking up the verticality of the marquee numerals and creating a rhythm between the two objects. The garland threaded between them and along the wall behind, with mirror-finish balloons placed at intervals where the room's chandeliers would catch them.
The reflective balloons did the heavy lifting visually, which meant their placement was the entire job. Matte burgundy balloons fill volume; mirror-finish ones throw light. I planned the mirror placements first and let the silk cream and matte burgundy fill around them — the inverse of how a stock garland gets built. Every balloon was hand-tied and grouped by reflectivity before installation, not pulled off a pre-made strand.
Mer Yerevan is a restaurant rather than a dedicated event venue, which means the install had to coexist with active service. The garland was self-supporting at every point along its run — no floor stanchions where guests would walk, no overhead suspension where servers would pass. Restaurant installs always demand that physical discipline; the design has to read as composed without occupying any path that a working room needs open.
A 30th in a restaurant succeeds or fails on whether the installation looks composed in photographs taken at a dining table from two feet away — the mirror placements were what made those close shots hold.
