Brena's 18th Birthday
About This Installation
A stunning outdoor 18th birthday at a private residence in Westwood. I designed a backdrop with organic balloon garland in hot pink, blush, white, and silver — centered around an in-house built wavy 3D backdrop panel with pink LED lighting and a round-top backdrop panel. The marquee '18' numbers with warm light and vinyl 'Happy Birthday Brena' lettering created a bold, photo-ready focal point against the garden backdrop.
Fuchsia, pale pink, and ivory spilled across the wavy 3D panel under late-afternoon Westwood sun — a palette built for outdoor light that shifts every fifteen minutes from gold-hour amber to dusk neutral. The hot pink was the anchor; the pale pinks and ivories held the middle and edges so the wall didn't read as one solid block of saturation. Pink LED lighting along the curve of the panel kicked in as the sun dropped, taking over from natural light without a visible handoff.
Two panels framed the photo zone. The wavy 3D panel carried integrated pink LED lighting along its inner curve — a structural choice, built into the panel rather than clamped on afterward, so the glow read as architecture instead of as a string of party lights. The round-top panel sat beside it as a counter-shape: where the wavy panel was kinetic, the round-top was steady, giving the composition a stable edge. A 4ft marquee '18' with warm-light bulbs anchored the floor between them, and vinyl-cut 'Happy Birthday Brena' lettering ran across the upper garland line. The organic balloon garland in fuchsia, blush, white, and silver wrapped both panels at the top and broke their rectangular geometry.
Every fabricated piece — both panels, the cake stand, the marquee numbers, the vinyl lettering — was built by my team in our studio in the week leading up to install. The marquee bulbs were warm-temperature only, matched against the pink LED's cooler tone so the two light sources held distinct jobs rather than competing. No outsourcing, no rental panels stretched to fit.
A private Westwood residence outdoors at golden hour is one of the more demanding sites — the light is generous but uncontrollable, and any built object has to hold its color value through a forty-five-minute shift in ambient temperature. I planned the palette for that shift specifically: fuchsia reads its truest hue under warm afternoon light, and the ivory white kept the composition from going pink-on-pink-on-pink once the LEDs came up. The marquee number was positioned where the garden's natural backdrop fell into shadow first, so the bulbs took over the brightness pyramid cleanly.
An eighteenth birthday photographs differently than a sweet sixteen — the readership of the photos is the honoree and her friends, not the parents. The wavy panel and the pink LED gave the photo zone the editorial-feeling backdrop the age group reads as worth posting.
