Arpi's 10th Birthday
About This Installation
A pink and gold 10th birthday celebration at a private home in Granada Hills. I designed a pink arch backdrop with light-up marquee numbers 10 and organic balloon garland in pale pink, baby pink, gold, and white.
The pale pink, baby pink, gold, and white mixture was planned around home daylight — Granada Hills backyards and family rooms carry a lot of warm afternoon sun, and a saturated hot-pink palette would have read sunburnt by 2pm. I held the pinks at the pale end of the range and used gold sparingly as the contrast note rather than the dominant. White anchored the composition's brightness so the pinks stayed pink instead of drifting toward beige in shadow.
The pink arch sat as the central architecture, framing a single sightline rather than spreading across a whole wall. Organic balloon garland in the four palette tones traced the arch's curve, with the heaviest cluster at the top crown where the eye lands first. The light-up marquee 10 anchored the floor inside the arch — two numerals scaled large enough to read from across the room but proportioned to sit inside the arch's interior space, not crowd it. The numbers carried warm-temperature bulbs so they sat in the same register as the gold balloons; cool bulbs would have pulled blue into a palette built to read warm.
Every structural piece — the arch frame, the marquee 10 — was built in-studio and sized for this specific install. A rented arch typically comes in one of three generic widths, none of which match a 10-year-old's eye-level or the height she'd stand at for photographs. I sized this one to her, not to a stock dimension.
A private home in Granada Hills offers two affordances a venue install doesn't get: the family can control the room's lamp warmth and pull window light at will. I planned the install for late-afternoon golden hour through evening lamp light, which meant the pinks needed to survive a color-temperature shift from cool daylight to warm tungsten. The pale tones did — saturated pinks wouldn't have.
A 10th birthday sits between a kid party and an early-teen one, and the install has to read as the former without looking babyish in the photographs the daughter will look at in three years. Holding the pinks pale was the call that did that work.
