Arman's 1st Birthday — Space Adventure

Porter Ranch Private Home September 2025

About This Installation

A space-themed 1st birthday at a private home in Porter Ranch. I designed a custom backdrop with a spaceship and planet balloons in fog, sea blue, and salmon tones. The Mirelle natural-color 24-slat cake stand completed the cosmic celebration.

The fog, sea blue, and salmon palette spilled across a Porter Ranch living-room wall that gets hard afternoon sun through west-facing windows. A standard space-theme palette leans on navy and silver — both go muddy under direct daylight. I chose fog as the structural mid-tone because it reads as atmosphere rather than as gray, sea blue to carry the cosmic register without dropping into black-hole heaviness, and salmon as the warm interruption that kept the whole composition from going clinical. Under the room's overhead lighting the salmon stayed coral instead of flattening to pink.

The backdrop carried a single spaceship graphic anchored to the upper third of the panel — high enough that the planet balloons orbiting it had room to read as a system rather than as decoration crowding the ship. Organic balloon garland in the three palette tones traced the outer edge of the backdrop and gave the spaceship its sky. Planet balloons sat at staggered depths inside the garland: the largest at the focal point of the panel, the smaller ones echoing scale across the composition. The Mirelle natural-color 24-slat cake stand sat in front of the panel — natural wood grain breaks any space theme out of plastic-y kitsch and gives the cake a base that photographs as an object, not a prop.

The spaceship graphic, the cake stand, and the panel itself were built in my studio the week before install. I sized the planet balloons in three discrete diameters rather than running a smooth gradient — discrete scale reads as planets, smooth gradient reads as filler. The fog tone was a custom inflation mix; off-the-shelf gray latex carries too much blue cast for a palette this warm.

Porter Ranch homes give you reliable ceiling height and unreliable wall color — most have an off-white or warm beige that fights any cool-palette install. Setting the backdrop panel in front of the wall solved that: the cream substrate of the panel re-set the photographic baseline so the fog and sea blue read against neutral, not against the room. The salmon notes pulled the composition back toward the warm wall behind it so the panel didn't feel pasted in.

A first birthday photo set has to survive the parent's phone, the grandparent's camera, and the eventual frame on the hallway wall — the spaceship sat high so it cleared the baby's head in every seated shot.
