Arman's 1st Birthday — Little King
About This Installation
A royal lion-themed first birthday at Metropol Event Venue in Glendale. I designed a full backdrop wall featuring a wavy 3D backdrop panel with LED lighting and a 3D arch panel featuring a printed lion graphic. Custom wooden elements, an in-house built cake stand, and marquee number '1' with warm light — all framed by an organic garland in navy, gray, sand, and with vinyl 'Our Little King is ONE' lettering — brought the king theme to life.
The navy, fog, and sand palette pulled the lion-themed concept out of cliché — most lion-themed first birthdays land on red, gold, and brown safari kitsch. I chose tones that sit closer to a den at dusk: navy as the anchor, fog as the middle, sand for the warm note. Under Metropol's overhead lighting the navy held depth instead of flattening to black, and the fog caught the LED accents without competing with them.
Two panels framed the cake space. The wavy 3D backdrop carried integrated LED lighting along the curve — a structural choice, not an applique, so the light read as part of the wall rather than as decoration pinned to it. The arch panel beside it carried a printed lion graphic at a scale that worked from across the room. A 4ft marquee '1' with warm-light bulbs anchored the floor and gave the photo zone a single bright object to compose around. Organic garland in navy, gray, and sand sat across the top of both panels and broke the rectangular geometry of the backdrop wall.
Every fabricated piece — the panels, the cake stand, the CNC-cut 'Our Little King is ONE' signage in vinyl over acrylic, the marquee number — was built by my team in our studio. The marquee bulbs were warm-temperature only, matched to Metropol's room lighting; cool LEDs would have killed the mood the palette was set up to create.
Metropol is a dedicated event venue, which means the room geometry is reliable but the lighting is not yours to control. I sized the panels to fit a single sightline and placed the marquee number where the room's overhead lights wouldn't compete with its bulbs. The lion graphic sat at adult eye-level, not floor-level, so it read clean in both seated cake-cutting shots and standing wide shots.
A first birthday is one of the few installations that has to work for two audiences at once — the toddler in the chair and the camera six feet back. The marquee number handled the toddler's view; the panel composition handled the camera's.
