Sosse's Graduation Party at Castaway Burbank

Burbank Castaway Restaurant May 2025

About This Installation

A sophisticated graduation celebration at Castaway Restaurant in Burbank. I designed two white arch backdrops flanking the event space, each paired with a white round cake stand for dual photo moments. An LED 'Congrats' sign topped with a graduation cap served as the headline element. The organic balloon garland blended white, cream, silk gold, and hazelnut — an elevated monochrome palette that photographed especially well at Castaway's cityview venue in the evening light. Dual-arch graduation installs create room for graduates, parents, and friends to photograph without crowding, and my team coordinates all venue logistics end-to-end.

The white, cream, silk gold, and hazelnut palette was planned for Castaway's evening cityview lighting — a venue where most installations get crushed by the room's warm-amber ambient and the bright Los Angeles skyline behind the glass. A monochrome warm palette holds depth under those conditions where any cool tone would have flattened to gray, and a graduation install needs to read as composed rather than as a balloon arrangement competing with the view. Silk gold caught the room's evening light as the metallic accent, hazelnut anchored the depth, and cream and white kept the upper register bright.

The dual-arch configuration was a deliberate flow decision. My team built two white arch backdrops in our studio and placed them flanking the event space — one near the entrance side, one closer to the cityview wall — each paired with a white round cake stand for an independent photo zone. Graduation parties cluster three groups at once: graduates with friends, graduates with parents, full family. A single backdrop creates a queue; two backdrops let those groups photograph simultaneously without crowding. Organic balloon garland in white, cream, silk gold, and hazelnut spanned both arches, with the silk gold concentrated at the crowns and hazelnut grounding the base.

The LED 'Congrats' sign topped with a graduation cap sat as the headline element above the primary arch. Warm-bulb temperature, matched to Castaway's evening interior light — cool LEDs would have read sterile against the venue's golden hour wash and broken the monochrome warmth the palette was set up to hold. Both arches, both cake stands, and the headline sign were built and finished in-studio. The cake-cap detail was vinyl-cut and applied flush rather than perched on top, so the headline read as one designed object rather than two pieces stacked.

Castaway Restaurant sits above Burbank with the city as its evening backdrop, which means the install had to compete with — or yield to — one of the most photographed skylines in the region. I oriented both arches so the cityview entered the wide frames as ambient glow behind the install rather than as a competing horizon line, and I sized the arch geometry to fit the venue's load-in clearance without crowding the dining flow. The garland was weighted heavier at the cityview-facing arch since that side carried the evening light from outside as fill.

The split-arch decision was the one that mattered most — and Sosse, her family, and her friends all photographed without ever waiting in line for the same wall.
