Movie Premiere
About This Installation
A movie premiere installation at Universal Music Publishing Group in Santa Monica. I designed a starry night backdrop with piranha plant balloons, an organic balloon garland on the movie standee, and custom balloon planets and stars. A creative, immersive experience for the entertainment industry.
The blue, light blue, fuchsia, lilac, violet, green, and yellow palette spanned a wider chromatic range than I'd plan for almost any private event — corporate entertainment activations are the rare brief that earns a seven-color spread, because the IP itself dictates the palette. The Universal Music Publishing Group floor in Santa Monica runs on mixed industrial lighting with a cooler cast, which let the violets and lilacs hold their separation from the blues instead of bleeding together; warmer venue light would have collapsed the cool end of the palette into one note.
The starry-night backdrop carried the composition's depth — clusters of organic latex sized as planets and stars threaded across the panel face at varied scales, so the surface read as a built sky rather than as a flat printed graphic. Piranha plant balloons anchored the lower section of the activation at child-and-adult eye-level, sized so the IP reference was unmistakable from across the room. The standee carried its own organic balloon garland, framing the printed asset without obscuring the title artwork. Balloon planets and stars in lilac, violet, and fuchsia broke the cooler base of the palette and gave the photographs warm accent points to anchor against.
My team built the piranha plant balloons, the planets, and the stars by hand in our studio — each custom sculpt had to match the IP's existing color reference before it could ship to install. The starry-night backdrop required cluster-scale tuning across the panel face so the smaller star elements read at distance without crowding the planet anchors. Foil-to-latex ratios were vetted under the venue's actual lighting before final cluster placement.
Universal Music Publishing Group's Santa Monica venue is a corporate floor, not an event space — which means the install had to work around fixed architectural elements and a load-in window timed to the publishing group's operational schedule. I sized the standee garland and backdrop to the room's existing sightlines and placed the planet accents where the mixed overhead lighting wouldn't flatten their dimensionality.
Corporate IP activations succeed or fail on whether the install reads as designed-not-decorated — the custom sculpted elements carried that recognition; the palette held the rest.
