Christmas Party at Kartopia

Van Nuys Kartopia Playground December 2025

About This Installation

A festive Christmas party at Kartopia Playground in Van Nuys. I designed two 8-foot rectangular red backdrop panels with custom built-in windows filled with snowflake details, styled alongside Christmas trees, a Santa mailbox, and wrapped gift boxes. A red podium stage served as the focal point for photos. The bold red, white, and green holiday color scheme and layered winter elements created a magical, immersive North Pole setting for the celebration.

The red, white, and green palette was a controlled choice, not a default. Saturated holiday red eats every other color around it under most artificial lighting, which is why I anchored the two large rectangular panels in a single confident red and held the green back to accents and tree styling. White carried the snow detail and the window cutouts; green stayed in the trees and garland; red did the structural work. Inside Kartopia's mixed warm-and-cool overhead lighting, the deep red held value instead of going pink, and the white snowflake details caught the room light without washing out.

Two 8-foot rectangular panels framed the photo zone, sized to read as architecture rather than props. Each panel carried a custom built-in window with snowflake details — not stuck-on appliques but cut and built into the panel structure so the window read as part of the wall. The red podium stage anchored the center of the composition and gave guests a defined photo position; without it, families with kids would have drifted across the install and broken every sightline. Christmas trees flanked the panels at the outside edges; the Santa mailbox and wrapped gift boxes sat at the base to fill the lower third where the eye lands in a wide shot.

The panels, the cutout windows, the podium, and the styled box arrangements were built by my team in our studio. The window cutouts were the design call that pulled the whole install out of generic-Christmas-backdrop territory — they gave the red panels architecture instead of just surface, and they framed the snowflake details in a way that stuck applique never could.

Kartopia is a children's playground venue, which means the install had to survive sustained foot traffic from kids who do not respect base weights. I sized the panels for stability over height, weighted the bases heavier than a standard venue install would have needed, and placed the podium far enough forward of the panels that running children stayed clear of the structure. The styled props at the base were arranged tight enough to read full in photos but loose enough that no one tripped.

A holiday install with kids in attendance has to hold up to a four-hour stress test that no banquet hall ever delivers — the structural overbuild was the design choice that made every photo work.
