Mr. & Mrs. Afifi Engagement Party

West LA Above the Block December 2025

About This Installation

An elegant engagement party for Mr. and Mrs. Afifi at Above the Block event venue in West LA. I designed an in-house built partial ripple backdrop panel with an arched top and vertical fluted detailing, framed by a full organic balloon garland in white and cream tones cascading on both sides. The vinyl 'Celebrating the Future Mr. and Mrs. Afifi' lettering in mixed script and serif fonts added a personalized, romantic focal point. A custom silk bow at the base completed this refined, photo-ready composition.

The white and cream palette was a deliberate restraint — most engagement installations reach for blush or rose gold and end up looking like a bridal-shower rehearsal. I planned the two-tone neutral specifically for Above the Block's evening lighting, where warm overheads pull cream forward and let white read as the brighter accent rather than the flat dominant tone. Under that wash, the cascading garland kept dimensional shadow instead of collapsing into one bright surface.

A single panel carried the whole composition. My team built the partial ripple backdrop with an arched top and vertical fluted detailing — the ripple gave the surface enough texture to hold light without needing applied decoration, and the arch crown framed the vinyl headline. Organic balloon garland in white and cream cascaded down both sides, anchored heavier at the base and thinning as it climbed, so the panel read as a designed object rather than a wall with balloons stuck to it. A custom silk bow sat at the base on the floor side — a tactile counterweight that broke the symmetry just enough to keep the composition from feeling rigid.

The vinyl 'Celebrating the Future Mr. and Mrs. Afifi' lettering mixed script and serif weights, CNC-cut in my studio and applied flush to the arched crown so the type sat as part of the panel rather than floating on it. The fluted detailing was built into the panel itself, not added — that distinction matters because the camera reads applied texture differently than structural texture, and engagement photography lives at close range where the difference shows. No outsourcing, no rental backdrops stretched to fit.

Above the Block is a controlled interior space, which means the room geometry was reliable but the wall sightlines were narrow. I sized the panel and the garland cascade to fit the dominant photo angle the room offered — a near-frontal shot with shallow side coverage — rather than building outward into space the camera would never see. The silk bow accent sat low enough to enter every full-body shot of the couple without crowding the headline above.

Engagement parties are photographed at conversational distance more than any other event type, and the ripple texture earned its place there — close-range frames picked up the panel's surface depth in a way a flat backdrop would not have given them.
