What Makes a Custom Balloon Column Stand Out

Balloon columns are freestanding vertical installations that create structure and visual anchoring within an event space. Unlike a balloon garland that flows along a surface, or a balloon arch that spans overhead, columns stand on their own β€” marking entrances, framing stages, lining aisles, or defining zones within a venue. They are one of the most effective ways to add height and dimension to an event without requiring wall or ceiling attachment.

I design each column to match the scale of the space and the style of the event. The color palette, balloon sizes, texture, and overall silhouette are all tailored β€” there is no standard template. A pair of columns framing a dessert table at a backyard baby shower looks completely different from a set of six tower columns lining an aisle at a corporate gala. The design process accounts for sightlines, ceiling height, guest flow, and how the columns will photograph from key angles.

Columns also work as part of larger installations. Paired with a balloon backdrop or integrated into a full event styling package, columns extend the visual language of the decor throughout the venue. You can see examples of column installations across the projects gallery.

Balloon Column Types

Every column is built to match the event style and venue conditions. Here are the formats I work with most:

Classic Columns

Clean, stacked balloon columns with uniform sizing and a polished silhouette. These are the most traditional format β€” ideal for framing entrances, stages, or photo areas. Often topped with a large round balloon or custom element.

Spiral Columns

Two or more colors wound in a spiral pattern up the column, creating a dynamic, eye-catching effect. Popular for birthdays, school events, and celebrations with bold color themes. The spiral pattern is customized to match the event palette.

Organic Columns

A more natural, free-form style with mixed balloon sizes and an asymmetric shape. Organic columns have a modern, editorial feel that works well for weddings, bridal showers, and elevated celebrations. The texture and density vary throughout the column for a sculptural look.

Tower Columns

Tall, slender columns designed for maximum height impact. Tower columns work well in venues with high ceilings β€” ballrooms, lofts, and outdoor tent setups. They create strong vertical lines that define the space without taking up much floor area.

Entrance Columns

Paired columns placed at doorways, driveways, or venue entrances to set the tone as guests arrive. These are typically designed as a matching set and can incorporate signage, themed elements, or number balloons. Entrance columns are one of the most requested formats for birthday parties and baby showers.

Columns by Event Type

Balloon columns adapt to any celebration. A wedding calls for elegant organic columns in soft tones lining the ceremony aisle. A birthday party might use bold spiral columns flanking the cake table. A corporate event often features tower columns in brand colors framing the stage or entrance.

Common Questions

Balloon Column FAQ

How much does a balloon column cost in Los Angeles?
A single balloon column starts at $350. Paired entrance columns typically range from $600 to $1,000, and multi-column setups for larger events start at $1,200.
How tall are balloon columns?
Standard balloon columns are 5 to 7 feet tall. Taller columns up to 10 feet or more are possible depending on the venue ceiling height and the design. Height is determined during the planning process based on the space.
Can balloon columns be used outdoors?
Yes. Outdoor columns are built with weighted bases and weather-appropriate materials. Setup timing is adjusted to minimize sun and heat exposure before the event begins.
What is the difference between a balloon column and a balloon arch?
A column is a freestanding vertical structure, while an arch curves overhead to connect two points. Columns are often used in pairs to frame an entrance or stage, whereas an arch creates a single focal frame. Both can be combined in one installation.
How long do balloon columns last?
Professionally built balloon columns last 2 to 3 days indoors. For outdoor events, columns are constructed to hold up through the duration of the event with appropriate material and base weighting.
Can I add a topper or signage to a balloon column?
Yes. Columns can be topped with large feature balloons, number balloons, custom signage, or themed elements. These are designed and built in my studio and integrated as part of the column structure.
